Dr. Joy Varghese serves as the Director of the Department of Hepatology and Transplant Hepatology at Gleneagles Global Health City in Chennai. He is a visiting consultant hepatologist and liver transplant physician, as well as a member of the teaching faculty at the Department of Hepatology at Government General Hospital, Chennai, and the Institute of Liver Transplantation at Government Stanley Medical College Hospital, Chennai. Dr. Varghese has been instrumental in establishing cadaver liver transplant programs across various hospitals in Tamil Nadu and Kerala, encompassing both government and private sectors. He is an examiner for the National Board Examination in Gastroenterology (Specialty) and has authored over 60 research articles in hepatology and liver transplantation, contributing to indexed journals and book chapters.
Additionally, he serves on the editorial boards of the World Journal of Hepatology and the Global Journal of Gastroenterology & Hepatology, and he is a reviewer for numerous international and national journals. For three years, he held the position of Course Director for the Fellowship in Hepatology at Gleneagles Global Health City, which is affiliated with The Tamil Nadu Dr. M.G.R. Medical University in Chennai, India.
Dr. Joy Varghese completed his Fellowship in Transplant Hepatology at the University Hospital in Essen, Germany. Earlier in his career, he was an assistant professor at Amrita Institute of Medical Sciences and Research Centre in Kochi before becoming a Consultant Hepatologist and Liver Transplant Physician at Global Hospital and Health City in Chennai, where he has been involved in the peri-operative and long-term management of over 600 adult liver transplants, both cadaveric and living donor.
Dr. Joy Varghese possesses extensive experience in managing patients in the medical and surgical liver intensive care unit (Liver ICU). Notably, he is among the few pioneers globally advocating for the role of therapeutic plasma exchange in the management of liver diseases. His current clinical interests include Hepatitis B, Hepatitis C, fatty liver, cirrhosis, liver transplantation, and liver cancer, while his research interests focus on Hepatitis B, Hepatitis C, fatty liver, and liver cancer.
