Dr. Avnish Seth

Dr. Avnish Seth is the Head of Medical Gastroenterology Hepatology and Manipal Organ Sharing & Transplant at Manipal Hospital. Following his time as a consultant to the Armed Forces in Gastroenterology and Hepatobiliary Sciences, he developed a keen interest in advanced GI Endoscopic procedures and the treatment of liver disorders. In 2004, he was appointed as the head of the department at the esteemed army hospital (research & referral) in New Delhi, where he served as the Gastroenterologist to the President of India. Dr. Seth played a pivotal role in establishing the DNB (Gastroenterology) program in 2004. Additionally, he completed a successful 6-month Fellowship in Liver Transplantation in the UK in 2006 and subsequently established a thriving liver transplant program at the army hospital (R&R). Prior to this, he held professorial positions at Delhi University (2004) and Indraprastha University (2008). Dr. Seth has also contributed significantly to the field as a governing council member for the Indian Society of Gastroenterology (ISG) and the Society of GI Endoscopy of India (SGEI). In 2007, he launched the Armed Forces Organ Retrieval & Transplantation Authority (AORTA) and played a pivotal role as its founding director. Under his leadership, the organization achieved remarkable success in organ donation after brain death, resulting in numerous liver, kidney, cornea, and heart transplants. Dr. Seth’s expertise was recognized by the government of India, as he was appointed as a member of the Ministry of Health & Family Welfare committee responsible for formulating national guidelines for liver transplantation in 2007. In recognition of his meritorious service, he was awarded the Vishisht Sewa medal by the President of India on 26 January 2009. Dr. Seth retired prematurely from the armed forces medical services in 2009 and subsequently served as the head of the Department of Gastroenterology and Liver Diseases at BLK Superspeciality Hospital from 2009 to 2011. In 2011, he completed a Fellowship in Endoscopic Ultrasound from the Medical University of South Carolina and the University of Alabama Birmingham in the USA. He also joined the Fortis Group of Hospitals in 2012. Dr. Seth’s expertise lies in advanced GI endoscopic procedures, and he has an impressive portfolio of over 100 publications to his credit.
