Dr. Shanmugasundaram, a Consultant Urologist, earned his superspeciality degree in Urology from the esteemed Christian Medical College in Vellore in 2008, subsequently obtaining his DNB in the field. His confident demeanor is a result of extensive experience in various urological and renal transplant surgeries, coupled with a compassionate approach to patient care and a strong commitment to research—principles he embraced during his training at this distinguished institution. Prior to entering the teaching program, he served for three years as a non-postgraduate resident in the Urology department after completing his M.S. in General Surgery.
Dr. R Shanmugasundaram later became a faculty member in the same Urology department where he received his specialty training, ultimately holding the position of Associate Professor of Urology until 2012. Throughout his decade-long tenure at CMC Vellore, he performed over 100 renal transplant surgeries and 220 renal donor surgeries, gaining expertise in laparoscopic donor nephrectomies and multivessel renal transplants. His special interests lie in reconstructive urology and renal transplantation.
Currently, Dr. R Shanmugasundaram leads the Urology department and is a dedicated academician with 24 peer-reviewed publications in various national and international journals. He is a lifetime member of several professional organizations, including the Urological Society of India, the European Association of Urology, the Indian Society of Organ Transplantation, the Indian Medical Association, and the National Academy of Medical Sciences.
Dr. Shanmugasundaram is committed to continually enhancing his knowledge and technical skills to provide optimal care for his patients. He has actively participated in numerous national and international conferences, presenting his research findings.
