After completing his medical degree in India, Dr. Refai relocated to the UK to pursue advanced training. He specialized in Cardiology at renowned tertiary cardiac centers, including St. Bartholomew’s Hospital in London, Imperial College Hospital (formerly Hammersmith Hospital), St George’s Hospital, The Essex Cardiothoracic Surgical Centre, and King’s College Hospital. Following 14 years of specialized training in advanced Interventional Cardiology, he returned to India, where he has been practicing for the past four years.
Currently, he is affiliated with Apollo Main Hospital on Greams Road in Chennai. Dr. Refai holds esteemed fellowships, including the Fellowship of the Royal College of Physicians in London (FRCP), the Fellowship of the American College of Cardiology (FACC), and the Fellowship of the European Society of Cardiology (FESC).
Dr. Refai Showkathali serves as an examiner for the MRCP PACES examination conducted by the Royal College of Physicians in London and holds the academic title of “Professor” at the Apollo Hospital Educational and Research Foundation. His expertise encompasses Angioplasty (stent placement), Transradial Rotablation, Chronic Total Occlusion (CTO) Angioplasty, Left Main Stem (LMCA) procedures, Bifurcation Angioplasty, Optical Coherence Tomography (OCT), Transcatheter Valvular Interventions, as well as Pacemaker, ICD, CRT implantation, and ASD closures.
Dr. Refai Showkathali completed a TAVI (Transcatheter Aortic Valve Implantation) Fellowship at King’s College Hospital, a leading TAVI center globally since 2007. Dr. Refai has an extensive publication record, with over 50 peer-reviewed articles in prestigious international journals, and is frequently invited as a faculty member at various national and international conferences. Additionally, he regularly reviews manuscripts for both national and international journals.
