PROF. MAYIL V. NATARAJAN serves as the 7th Vice-Chancellor of The Tamil Nadu Dr. M.G.R. Medical University located in Guindy, Chennai. He previously held the position of Director at the Institute of Orthopaedic and Traumatology within the Madras Medical College and Government General Hospital in Chennai. An esteemed Orthopaedic Surgeon, he is celebrated for his groundbreaking contributions to Orthopaedic Oncology.
In 1988, he pioneered the concept of Limb Salvage Surgery utilizing Custom Mega Prosthesis. He played a crucial role in establishing Orthopaedic Oncology as a recognized Sub-Specialty within Orthopaedic Surgery in India. His extensive experience includes a personal series of 1,700 cases involving Custom Mega Prosthesis, the highest recorded by a single surgeon globally. He has also designed and patented eight distinct types of Custom Mega Prosthesis.
Throughout his career, he has been honored with three National Awards presented by the President of India, Shri A.P.J. Abdul Kalam, which include: (1) Dr. B. C. Roy National Award (2004), (2) National Award for Welfare of the Disabled (2005), and (3) Padma Shri Award (2007). On an international level, he was the first Indian to serve as President of the Asia Pacific Musculoskeletal Tumour Society. Additionally, he was awarded a Fellowship by the Royal College of Surgeons of England and received an Honorary Fellowship from the British Orthopaedic Association.
